in the last weekIf you care about decent food to match the cost of your stay, we’d recommend staying elsewhere in Paro. While the property, room, and location are undeniably stunning (5-star), the food was a massive disappointment and felt like an exercise in cost-cutting. The dining was consistently underwhelming. Across our stay, it felt like the kitchen's focus seemed to be on producing meals as cheaply and simply as possible, relying on a bit of surface presentation to mask it. The low point was the packed food ZhiwaLing provided for our hiking day to Tiger’s Nest. After a very challenging hike in poor weather, opening our packed lunch to completely stale, inedible sandwiches and expired apples was really disappointing, to say the least - and felt somewhat careless for guests doing this kind of hike. Dinner set menus had little variety, the cooking style was quite basic, and the portions were very small. While everyone totally understands the limitations of sourcing ingredients in Bhutan, hotels in far more remote areas blew us away with fantastic meals under much tougher conditions (and at the same star level). We did reluctantly share our feedback—and while the team were apologetic, their service recovery was quite lacking. When quality is the problem, offering more of it made little sense to us. We felt the obvious, appropriate move would have been to offer an alternative form of compensation, which unfortunately didn’t transpire.
